New metal roof for a front porch

The existing roof was an old flat seam tin metal roof that had rusted through in a few spots- there was really no saving it. Since the material is no longer being manufactured my client was looking at other options but wasn’t finding anything that would match the upper roof. [Read more…]
Traditional standing seam copper roofing
We installed this new standing seam copper roof on a house in Old Town Alexandria in November. The house was built around 1743 and at one point in it’s life had a metal roof; while getting a permit for the roof replacement I had to do a little research to find what type of material would be architecturally appropriate for the house. I found a permit from 1920, it was permit # 160 and in loopy script writing it mentioned a new metal roof and a total project cost of $75.00; the roofers name was John. W. Padgett. Charcoal Timberline shingle roof with standing seam copper porch
There are many houses in Arlington and Alexandria that are virtually identical to this one, most were built 50 to 70 years ago; this house was probably on its third or fourth roof. As you can see, the existing light gray shingles are old and worn and are at the end of their life. The Owner of this house will soon outgrow it, so it was important to install a new roof that will protect the property but will also add some curb appeal when the day comes to sell it and move on.
