Skylights: They let sunlight into your home but if they aren't installed properly they can let the rain in too. Click here to see the wrong way and the right way to install a skylight.

Vent Pipes: These pipes let air into your plumbing system, but when neglected they can leak around the seal between the pipe and the flashing base. Sometimes cheap plastic pipe boots can crack around.

Valleys: Where two roof planes come together there is an increased volume of rainwater, if the valley isn't laid out properly it can become a major leak source.

Walls: Where a roof meets a vertical surface there can be lots of ways for water to enter, the type of flashing that will waterproof a wall is called step flashing. Step flashing is installed in between each and every shingle course. Leaving out a few will cause leaking during wind driven rain.

Middle of Nowhere: Most roof leaks occur where the roof meets a penetration like a chimney, skylight, wall or pipe; sometimes the leaking can be found in the middle of the roof where no penetration exists, these leaks can be hard to find but are usually due to a misplaced nail or sloppy preparation when the roof was first installed.
